I love being a practicing attorney because it allows me the opportunity to use the law to make someone’s life better. The reality of being a lawyer is that it is not as glamorous as it appears on television and the movies, and certainly lawyers do not spend most of their days arguing high-profile cases in packed courtrooms. Nevertheless, being a lawyer is extremely personally rewarding and my law practice covers everything from small business and family issues to taxes and immigration. There is a wide diversity of new issues and cases that always keep me intellectually stimulated and interested in my daily routine.

The daily grind of being an attorney consists mostly of drafting filings for the court. There is a lot of cerebral activity involved in crafting legal arguments and locating the applicable case law to support a client’s position.

The pros of being a lawyer is that it is intellectually stimulating and every day is truly unique. A lawyer’s life is not mechanical in which the person does the same task every day like a factory worker. This is an extremely rewarding aspect of the job to me.

On the negative side, being a lawyer can be an extremely stressful job when there are tight time constraints to file pleadings or make a motion. The court system is very unforgiving of an attorney that cannot meet strict statutory deadlines. It is the attorney’s responsibility to keep track of the court’s calendar and meet the procedural and substantive responsibilities that are a necessary aspect of practicing law.

Sometimes long hours in the office can keep me away from my family and my wife and children and they probably rightfully feel that the law is a jealous mistress that takes up too much of my time.
