Michaela Leitz
Self-employed

I am Michaela Leitz a professional fashion stylist & image consultant who is empowering plus-size women through styling with my brand Michaela Leitz – Confidence & Style.

I am self-employed which means I can work in my own tempo. That is one of the reasons I wanted to work in this particular field. The other reason is, that I love fashion and I had a lot of struggles when I became a plus-size since we still get ignored by the fashion industry.

My typical day

Normally I start with Instagram. I am checking and welcoming my new followers, read & reply the messages and post a fashion poll every morning. My followers are deciding which outfits they like most, and start inspiring them to try new outfits and styles. Creating new content as feed posts, filming for reels and stories is also a daily business.

After that, I mostly work on my clients outfits, do style analysis, build a style guide for them or analyze the perfect colors for their own color palette.

I am able to work from all over the world, and I am able to have a bigger client base.

I also do provide personal shopping sessions, meeting the client face to face is obviously another experience. Especially going shopping with brides makes me happy, they are nervous about the wedding dress and I help them to make the right choices.

Of course, I also have to do administrative work, as paying bills & taxes, writing invoices, write blog posts, or finding a freelancer to work on my website.

Once or twice a week, I meet up online with other Stylists & Image Consultants from all over the world. We share our success, educate each other, or help with special clients if we haven’t faced the clients special issue yet.

From time to time I meet up with boutique owners, make-up artists, hairdressers, photographers, or brands for collaborations or simply to get to know their inventory.

Pros

  • I absolutely love my job
  • Being able to work in a creative field
  • Making a positive impact for plus-size women
  • The big network of stylists & image consultants who really help each other
  • Being paid for what I love doing
  • Being my own boss
  • Always up to do date about fashion I decide with whom I work with

Cons

  • Plus-Size women are harder to dress, not because of their body, every body can be dressed, but due to the lack of variety in the fashion industry
  • It makes me sad that a lot of my clients I talk to want to lose weight, not because they don’t feel well. They want to do it to find more fashionable clothes and being more accepted in society.
  • I am responsible for finding enough clients to make a living, this is the downside of every entrepreneur
  • The big amount of admin work, as taxes, invoices, etc. I never liked mathematics.
