Day in the life of
Digital Marketing Specialist – Filip Silobod
My day looks like this: When I start in the morning I look at my email/messages. Then I browse LinkedIn as there is always something good shared there. Examples of new tips from Google or your connections who are in this field.
Check rankings and keywords for clients from yesterday. I look for which keywords improved, what was the overall traffic, is it improving or declining, are certain target keywords declining or growing. Especially for the keywords, you said you will monitor and try to improve rankings.
Check the revenue in Google Analytics for eCommerce clients. Check their AdWords how did campaigns perform yesterday. Which keywords got clicks, how much was the spend, and the ROI on them.
Look for backlink opportunities, analyze content on the site. What new content could be added, what should it look like, does it match the keywords you target.
Brainstorm ideas on new ways to cover the target audience online.
Send emails to clients with recommendations for their content, new pages, backlink opportunities.
Pros
Days are usually not the same and time goes by quickly. The work is exciting and you always need to learn new things, expand your knowledge. There is a lot of learning material and new insights available. You will have some interaction with clients so it’s not like a dev job where you are completely behind the scenes. Problem-solving, logical thinking, and real innovative thinking are rewarded here. There is good potential to work remotely.
Cons
You are often dealing with the uncertain, the unknown results. You can never be comfortable with the outcomes of your digital marketing. It is not like doing the same thing many times and getting the same results. Every client, website is different and has a different target audience.
Advice to students interested in getting into Digital Marketing
Try the different fields in digital marketing before you get a job. It’s important to find the area in digital marketing you like or love. In school also explore different marketing fields and find ones you are interested in. Ideally, start your website that is about a certain topic you know. Write content, design the layout, pages of the site, do online market research, who would read content on your site, is there interest, search volume for your keywords? Do SEO, PPC, email marketing with Mailchimp, and social media.
