Although a bachelor’s degree is not required, some postsecondary education is increasingly preferred for many Food Service Managers positions, especially at upscale restaurants and hotels. Some food service companies and national or regional restaurant chains recruit management trainees from college hospitality or food service management programs, which require internships and real-life experience to graduate.

You may need some previous work-related skill, knowledge or experience to be a Food Service Manager. For example, an electrician must complete three or four years of apprenticeship or several years of vocational training, and often must have passed a licensing exam, in order to perform the job.

Careers in this difficulty category will usually need 1 or 2 years of on-the-job training and informal training with experienced workers. These careers usually involve using communication and organizational skills to coordinate, supervise, manage, or train others to accomplish goals. Although not required, voluntary certification shows professional competence, particularly for Food Service Managers who learned their skills on the job. The National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation awards the Foodservice Management Professional designation to managers who meet several criteria, including passing a written exam, completing coursework, and meeting experience requirements.
