Day in the life of
Holiday Representative – Sam O’Brien
For 18 months back in the year 2011, I was a Holiday Representative for a large holiday company.
A great position for a student who cannot decide in which direction to turn. I was in between making a big life change and thought it sounded like a fun position so got through the vigorous interview stages and landed the job!
My first position was in Taba, Egypt, a sleepy, man-made beautiful resort on the shores of the Red Sea and in the middle of the desert!
I arrived in 40-degree heat in April and didn’t see a single cloud before October- yes seriously- I kid you not!
My typical duties included collecting guests from the airport, giving a little intro to the resort on the way from the airport. After settling them in their hotel I would prepare for the Welcome Meeting the following day. This was my big chance to SELL! Every week I had a target and my commission was based on sales of excursions.
Every morning and evening I had hotel duties meeting the guests, solving problems, answering queries, and taking payments for the trips I’d sold.
Pros
Pros were living in a 5-star all-inclusive hotel, getting to go on many fantastic excursions with guests, and having every 4 hours in the afternoon for my own leisure time.
Cons
Cons were dealing with guests, whether intoxicated, unwell or just downright rude!
I believe becoming a Holiday Representative gives you so many life skills it is a fantastic opportunity for young people to consider.
There’s a saying that “people take this job for a reason, a season, or for life!”.
For me it was a season, never regretted and never forgotten.
