Day in the life of
Game Tester – Tanay Sankhe
It’s a 9 to 5 job and a typical day starts with a meeting with the project manager. The workload depends on the game development project that the company takes into its hands.
My team and I talk to the game developers. The part of the game they develop is sent out to us for testing on the respective platform. For example, currently, we are working on a desktop game. Before starting the work, we first have to refer to the GDD i.e. Game Design Document, which gives me and the other project members a brief overview of the game (that includes the info regarding the functions, controls, levels, etc).
After playing the game, I give feedback to the developer in the form of paperwork and videos. I have to maintain an excel sheet in which I have to report all the bugs and defects that I find and before logging out of the system, submit this report to the developer for further improvements.
Major responsibilities that I have to handle as a game tester are:
- Soak testing: Know how well the game will perform under certain conditions
- Smoke testing: Determine the stability of the game developed
- Functionality testing: Check the smooth working of functions and actions)
- Compatibility testing: Confirm whether the app/game developed is compatible on cross-platforms
- UI testing: Test the user interface i.e. elements that will come in contact with the user.
- GUI testing: Check the placement of elements like buttons, action controls, font, sizes, colors, etc.
Pros
- It’s a fun and interesting job, especially for people who grew up playing games like me.
- You don’t easily feel tired during working hours.
- Great experience of playing the games which are not launched yet.
- Like-minded team members.
- Company offers devices for testing from their side.
- The hiring process is not that tough.
Cons
- I have to play the game for N number of times to catch the defects and bugs.
- Breaks aren’t that long.
- Salary varies depending on which device platform you work on.
- HR and the operational team do not synchronize sometimes.
Game Testers
Game Testers, or Quality Assurance Testers, are responsible for testing video games to uncover defects and glitches, such as missing visuals or game-breaking physics. Game Testers report bugs to the Developers and test the fixes to determine if the bugs are resolved.
