Day in the life of

Yodel.io

I’m the CTO and one of the co-founders of the SaaS company Yodel.io.

My typical day

As we’re still growing rapidly there is no definition for a typical day for me, but you can basically slice it into various parts:

Administration

My day usually starts with going through emails. We use various monitoring tools which inform about usage spikes, unexpected errors, and general performance. These tools usually deliver a nice summary of the last 24h which allows me to recognize pain points and potential problems and act upon them. We also use tools that ensure that components and dependencies of the various apps and micro-services we have build are up to date. I screen all the proposed changes and either approve or reject them, based on various factors. One part of the administration is also to check on various pull-requests my team created and either merge them into our codebase or review and discuss them.

Team Lead

Team lead includes both helping my team to excel in day-to-day tasks and also ensure continuous education in various advanced topics. As I’m currently also working very closely with my team, HR is also part of this, at least for all techs and devs.

Product Development

Product development is split mainly into two parts. The first one is defining and building various new features for our products. This sometimes includes external partners with whom I mostly handle the communication. I would also include informing and learning about design patterns, new techniques, services, tools, and programming languages in product development as this often results in improvements and adjustments in our existing products.

Pros

I think the best pro of my job is that I can decide what I’m working on.

Cons

A con would be a lot of responsibilities, especially as we’re still growing and some roles are not properly defined (yet).
