My typical day begins with a round of the wards (inpatient) while teaching students. Thereafter, I take sessions of patients in the outpatient department. This may also include research data collection if the patient fits an inclusion criteria and consents to be a part of the research.

Students doing assessments/ therapy sessions are supervised. Reports checked and signed. Post lunch, it’s time to take classes of trainees and supervise them in their academic presentations (case conferences, seminars, journal clubs). Thereafter, I prepare my classes for the next day/ that week or discuss dissertations with students. Once I leave the hospital premises, I work later on my research papers and scientific writing.

Pros

1. Job satisfaction from being able to help those in distress (more so, because I work in a govt based tertiary care hospital which provides free of cost treatment so we see a lot of clients from low socio-economic status and rural areas).
2. Opportunity to teach those training to become clinical psychologists (This entails passing on my insights and reflections from my years in the practice).
3. Research (being a part of active research and working on areas which have been neglected or not much work has been done, is highly engaging and motivating).
4. The liaisons that come with the job include being invited as a guest speaker in various seminars and conferences, and also as a speaker on TV and radio shows.

Cons

1. Being a govt hospital, the pay package is minimal.
2. It is a contract position, so there are no benefits.
3. The working hours are long as after the clinical work is over, academic and research work seems never ending.
4. We do not get many leaves as working in the hospital means 6 days a week and there are no summer/ winter vacations that faculty in normal colleges get.
