Day in the life of
Fleet Manager/Dispatcher – Justin Walker
I’m a Fleet Manager/Dispatcher.
My Typical Day
As a Fleet Manager/Dispatcher we communicate between drivers and sales on any issues with loads that our drivers are hauling. We typically have about 70-90 trucks on a fleet that we manage. The trucking industry is 24/7, but our shifts consist of 10-hour days/5 days a week and our night shift works 14-hours on a 4 on 4 off schedule.
The majority of the work as a Fleet Manager is done at a desk working with a computer, telephone, email, and cell phone. We ensure safe practices and on-time service for our customers. We manage personnel items keeping drivers compliant with their documentation to legally run a truck. We are the safety director of our fleet so we discuss and document issues that may arise (i.e., Critical events, accidents, incidents, etc.). We coordinate driver’s scheduling of time off and returning to work and how the equipment will be secured.
