Day in the life of
Expedition Coordinator – Shawn Richards
I’m an Expedition Coordinator but I consider myself a Professional Adventurer in my spare time.
My Typical Day
A typical day in my role involves a lot of coordination and teamwork, as we organize over 150 climbs per year each of which takes a minimum of 7 days to complete, there’s plenty of preparation to do for each climb every day! There are 7 different routes to choose from to climb Kilimanjaro with varying scenery and difficulty so there’s plenty of liaising with clients to ensure they choose the right route for them. After updating client files with any relevant information such as vaccination records, my afternoon revolves around creating and distributing itineraries for each expedition as well as booking hotels, safaris and other extra activities during the expedition.
Throughout the day I will have been liaising constantly with the Expedition Manager to ensure all staff organized for expeditions are up to date on relevant first aid training, vaccinations, and mountain rescue.
Pros
The biggest pro is certainly the location and the opportunity to join any of the expeditions throughout the year to refresh my climbing skills and reignite my sense of adventure.
Another one of the biggest pros is certainly the family-like team we have here. I’m fortunate in that I look forward to work every Monday morning because I get to hang out with my best friends and wave people off on one of the biggest and most extraordinary adventures they’ll ever experience in their lives.
Cons
The only con is the emails, mountains of emails!
Advice for students interested in this career path
I would recommend volunteering at some Rock Climbing or other sports centers to get your skills up to scratch; understanding the adventures you’re coordinating is essential to the role. There’s no specific degree required for this role, but anything that demonstrates excellent organization and communication skills is a bonus.
One of my favorite things about working in the UK is the wildlife I get to see every day.
