My name is Lisa Tannler, BA, CTR, and I work for LifeBridge Health in Maryland, and I live in Colorado. CTR stands for Certified Tumor Registrar.

My typical day

I work from home as does my staff.

Certified Tumor Registrars review charts of every cancer patient and need to answer certain questions (approximately 250 questions) about the patient, including demographics, diagnosis info, treatment information, and each year we follow up on the patient to determine if the patient is still cancer free. We follow up each year for the rest of the patient’s life or until the patient has a recurrence of cancer, whichever comes first.

Pros

1. We get to work from home, which saves approximately three hours a day by not having to get dressed up and driving in.
2. We save on gas money due to working from home
3. The position is in high demand
4. Hospitals generally have great benefits

Cons

1. It can take perseverance to get your first job in the industry. Hospitals usually want experience.
2. The first couple years in position may be lower salary (approx $20-$22 an hour). However, once you have a couple of years in the industry, the pay ranges from $25-33 an hour.
3. Work can be monotonous. You need to be the type of person who can work alone.
