Day in the life of
Bankruptcy Attorney – Todd Turoci
Being a bankruptcy attorney allows me to be in the only area of law that I can help people around 99% of the time. I am able to tell them what I can do, and then follow through with it. Other areas of the law require people to tell the client what they will TRY to do. In most cases neither side gets what they really want, but in bankruptcy I am often able to eliminate an individual, or families burden of debt by showing them a way out of their financial trouble and offering them a fresh start.
People often come to me drowning in debt and unable to see the legal options they have available. For instance, when a house is in foreclosure and being put up for sale, many times I am able to stop the sale and help the family save their home. As one of the only bankruptcy attorneys that offers emergency services in my area, this can be an extremely stressful, especially when clients come to me several days too late for me to stop the sale. Telling the client that I am unable to do anything, is one of the worst feelings I’ve ever felt.
That being said, it is still extremely rewarding. Knowing you helped someone save their home or find a way to relieve the stress so they can provide for their family, reminds me of why my job is so important and keeps me committed to finding solutions.
Pros
- We are able to deliver everything that I present to the client. If I tell them I can remove their liability for their debts, I’m able to 99% of the time.
- We are able to stop foreclosures. A family may be losing their house but by filing bankruptcy they are able to stop it and many times keep their home.
- It is rewarding. Many families/ individuals come in struggling with debt, and I’m able to help them continue with their lives, without the constant worry of their debts.
Cons
- People’s finances are a sensitive situation. It is hard to hear that a client needs help but they are unable to come up with any of the fees to pay for their bankruptcy.
- Some people believe they know the law. Some clients become frustrated because they read some things online that aren’t true. They also believe they are able to file for a Chapter 7 and sometimes their assets are too large so they must file a Chapter 13 instead.
- Getting documents can be hard. We request certain documents to be sent to our firm in order to help file their case, but people get busy and don’t send the information we need. But without the information we can’t file.
