What is the job like

Anakin Chauvin
Inflector Environmental Services

A typical workday contains paperwork, lots and lots of paperwork. On a daily basis, I work on scheduling, document submission and organization, data tracking and filing, and several additional duties that the Project Manager assigns weekly (Occasionally daily.). Additionally, I am often called upon to gather site-specific data for tracking and efficiency purposes. During your typical workday, you can expect to receive upwards of 80 different emails, so organization is critical. Without good organization, you will find yourself being pulled in several directions at once, so it is essential to remain focused and work on one task at a time.

While I have discussed the duties that are handled daily, the fun and the occasionally aggravating thing about this industry is that you can honestly never know what to expect. You are regularly required to help deal with situations or crises that suddenly appear in the middle of a workday, and while this may seem a con to this profession, I beg to differ. In this rapidly changing industry that brings new situations and problems into your day-to-day routine, you will find a sense of excitement and accomplishment as you deal with each one. You will never find yourself bored and stuck in the same routine day in and day out because while you may have those same day-to-day tasks, you will always find yourself in a new position dealing with a different situation.

Now I generally spend the majority of my day dealing with document tracking and organization. This is a relatively primary and routine task but incredibly important. On average, I receive 20 emails a day containing different documents ranging from RFI’s (Request for Information) to incident reports. While this task doesn’t take very long as tracking and organizing these documents is a reasonably simple task, you will find yourself spending a good deal of time doing it as you will likely receive anywhere between 10 – 40 documents a day.

Pros

One of the pros of working in this role is the constant change in the work environment. I am rarely bored with the work that I am given, as I am constantly involved with important team projects, making it a great stepping stone in my career. This role also allows me to have total exposure to the technology used, allowing me to familiarize myself and understand its mechanics.

Cons

The cons of working in this role are the long hours required and the stress that goes into it. As in most fast-paced environments, you may not always have enough time within a single day to complete all of your work or’ tasks.’ Generally, this means you will have to work longer hours or pick up on any slack during the weekend. You are also often required to delegate your work amongst your team or assign certain workers to find and fix slacking areas. Being forced to rely on others or work more extended hours/weekends often brings additional stress and can cut down on the time you have to rest and relax. It is important to note, though, that this hard work generally pays off and that at Inflector and many other businesses, hard work is always well compensated. While this can be a positive aspect, people working in this role might need to be forced to depend on people.
