The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) explained that statistics or math undergraduate degrees are helpful, but not absolutely essential, for students planning to apply to statistics graduate programs. The BLS cautions that students who do not major in these fields must still complete advanced math and statistics courses to be accepted to graduate programs. Suggested statistics classes include probability theory, regression analysis and experimental design. Most statistics jobs require a master’s degree or higher, and O*Net Online reports that 52% of biostatisticians hold a master’s degree. Master’s degree programs typically take two years to complete, and they usually culminate in a thesis or written exam.
