Mental Health Therapist

I am a Mental Health Therapist working with other mental health professionals. I also specialize in how grief and loss impact our relationship with self and others.

I have the opportunity to have variety in my typical day of work since I have created a specialty mental health business. The typical day usually begins with a counselor supervision session with an individual pursuing licensure in the state of Tennessee. We will discuss cases and their wins and challenges in working with their clients. I will have a few counseling sessions with individual working through their healing and transformation using mindfulness, Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), and Interpersonal Psychotherapy techniques. I may also have a consultation session with another clinician who is looking to build their brand and business. During the day, I include my own self-care which means taking a 15-minute power nap and scheduling lunch.

Pros

Some of the pros of being a mental health therapist entrepreneur, I get the opportunity to create what works for me and my client base when it comes to the number of hours and days I work. Also, I get to do work that I love. The profession allows for diversity in practice because of the different populations, work settings, and techniques. A person can create a practice that fits who they are and to serve the clients who are working with them.

Cons

The cons is that working for yourself can also lead to isolation. Also, the disparities around mental health in some communities make it hard for accessibility and availability of mental health professionals. If you are working for an agency, there is a ceiling on how much money you can earn. Plus the challenges of managed care.
