Most Transportation Planners have a master’s degree from an accredited urban or regional planning program. Many master’s programs accept students with a wide range of undergraduate backgrounds. However, many candidates who enter master’s degree programs have a bachelor’s degree in economics, geography, political science, or environmental design.
How hard is it
You will need a considerable amount of work-related skill, knowledge or experience to be a Transportation Planner. For example, an accountant must complete 4 years of college and work for several years in accounting to be considered qualified.
Careers in this difficulty category will usually need several years of work-related experience, on-the-job training, and/or vocational training. These careers usually involve coordinating, supervising, managing, or training others. Similar careers include sales managers, database administrators, chemists, and art directors.
License and certifications
As of 2012, New Jersey was the only state that required Transportation Planners to be licensed, although Michigan required registration to use the title “community planner.” More information can be requested from the regulatory boards of New Jersey and Michigan.
