Day in the life of
Construction Teacher – Rob Jones
I’m a Trainer at Multi Trades Training. We offer construction on-site apprenticeships and NVQs.
A typical day in the life of a construction skills teacher is firstly getting up early and attending a busy building site, starting at around 6.30am. Making sure I have the individuals I am responsible for that day in mind, for example packing the correct safety equipment and tools.
I explain and assess the individuals, every day is different which is great adapting to each course we offer. For example one day I could be teaching an individual how to hang a door in our carpentry course and the next day how to dig footings for a building – but I love the variety!
Pros
The main advantage for me is being able to make a huge difference in society, seeing the individual complete their training and potentially go onto build infrastructure. Even after training 100+ people that feeling never changes. Apart from that I love meeting new people from all different backgrounds and being on a building site is always a good laugh.
Cons
The advantages outweigh the disadvantages however I would say you need a lot of patience when teaching as well as enthusiasm and passion for what you’re teaching. If you’re teaching someone who doesn’t want to be there it is also hard but that doesn’t happen often!
