I am an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant with a private practice.

My days vary depending on many factors. On many days I go to people’s homes and help them make sure their babies are fed, that the families I see are supported in reaching their goals. I may see one, two, or three families in a day, three is a lot as I spend a couple of hours with them and I go to different neighborhoods. My practice is based in NYC.

Part of my work includes writing reports to pediatricians or Obs and midwives. I send follow up information to the families. I follow up with my clients via email or phone.

I do all my own marketing. I write letters to pediatricians and midwives/Obs. I spend some time on social media. I do support groups ~ I need to get the word out. I write a newsletter to my clients two to three times a month. I check my equipment and inventory my supplies.

Pros

I love babies, I love having a flexible schedule. I was able to build my business while my children were young and was able to be involved in their schools and activities. I am not someone who likes sitting at a desk all day so going from one home to another and one neighborhood to another is pleasing to me. I love meeting different people and learning about different cultures and this has allowed me to learn so much.

Cons

I am self-employed so if I don’t work I don’t make money. I live in NYC and getting from place to place carrying my gear which includes a baby scale. When the weather is bad, snowing, raining, bitter cold, or blazing hot, this can be extra challenging. Carrying this gear takes a toll on the body.

It can be emotionally draining working with new families for various reasons. Navigating this can be challenging.
