Day in the life of
Sustainability Manager – Nathaly Stanley
The truth is, I don’t have a typical day. It really depends on the time of year/month. We follow 4 different environmental certifications (CarbonNeutral, LEED, Green Globe, and Travelife) and they do not all happen at the same time so my focus can be on different areas of the hotel given the upcoming certification. They all have this in common though; they include monitoring, checking processes, staff training, looking for better ways to do things, data collection, entry, and analysis. All of these items take up a good amount of time, but analysis is the most interesting since this is where you get to make conclusions.
Daily tasks for me include monitoring consumption of water, gas, solar production, and research on sustainable solutions. Bucuti & Tara also hosts environmental talks for students, researchers, and even dignitaries from other countries so they can learn sustainability best practices that have been proven at Bucuti & Tara.
Pros
The biggest pro in my job is that I can help make a difference to positively affect the environment and educate others so they also embrace sustainability and make a difference. When people understand environmental problems that exist and have knowledge on what they can do to help be part of the solution, this makes a huge difference in their attitude and willingness to do things differently – both at work and in their personal lives.
Cons
A con is that sometimes things take longer than we would like, for example finding a solution that fits your situation.
