Pandora

I am currently working as a retail jewelry store owner. I have worked in retail from the age of 19 years old. I first started working for a small Pandora store in London.

A role in retail is really like being an actor, you have to smile and be your most sunny and polite self, to give your customers a good experience and help them choose the most suitable product for them.

It takes a lot of energy, especially if you are not feeling sunny and happy, say if you’ve had something go wrong in your personal life, the weather is bad, you broke your favorite cup, you had a fight with your boyfriend and your hair won’t go right! To be successful in retail no matter what you are selling, you have to learn to leave your problems at home, dust yourself down and become fabulous for your customers.

Pros and Cons

The downsides are long hours, mostly on your feet, constantly smiling, and being polite even though you don’t feel like it, the upside is, if you are good you can earn great commissions, get promoted quickly, and work your way up to a higher position. Plus there’s great job satisfaction in closing a sale on the most difficult customers! I used to see awkward customers as a challenge!

It is also the type of role where even the most basic skills say in a grocery store are transferable to other retail areas. If you have great customer retail experience in one area, you can move to a different sector, say from grocery to clothes, electrical to jewelry, or more high-end retail. Retail is retail, if you can smile and sell something, you can sell anything. It’s a fine line between being helpful and being pushy, no one wants to be served by a pushy retail person!
