Being a fashion designer is exciting, challenging, inspiring, and not what you would expect. I spend my days designing and producing my products as well as playing the social media marketing game. I strive to be size inclusive, use natural materials, and run a no waste studio. It’s super fun to plan collections and research styles. I love producing the pieces because I can ensure the highest quality.

What is your work life like?

My work life can be a whirlwind depending on the day or time of year. I plan out my schedule each day really carefully because I work from home and it’s easy to get distracted. Sometimes I’m traveling and sometimes I’m printing shipping labels and packing boxes. Every day is different and I like that.

Pros

The pros are being able to go out and find my own opportunities. I reach out to other artists, connect with stores, and engage with communities of people who are into my niche style. Everyday is different and I’m able to find a creative flow in so many ways. If something isn’t working, I can pivot into something else. That has really come in handy over the past year.

Cons

The cons would be the instability but that can turn into a pro as it drives me to find new ways to get my brand out there. I also tend to do too many things at once. I do all of my own production and sometimes that can get very overwhelming. Some days I am literally making it up as I go along. There’s no a clear cut path for Fashion Designers. You have to put in the hard work to find your design niche and identify your market. It’s not all the glammed you see in magazines. It takes determination and constantly being able to find your next inspiration for something you can make that people feel good wearing.
