Pros
Bringing joy to audiences, traveling across the country, getting paid to make people laugh harder than a junior high boy when someone farts.
Cons
Long travel times, internet trolls, driving through snowstorms holding the steering wheel tighter than the Hulk!
Oh, being away from family.
Another pro: being away from family!
Advice for aspiring Comedians
My advice to those who want to become a comedian:
Just know that there will be nights when no one laughs. If you can get through that, and live to perform again, you can do anything! Well, except win the lottery. Most people can’t do that.
How do you become one and what should they think about before becoming one?
You will be criticized for everything. People that don’t like you will say you aren’t funny, criticize your looks, and steal your car. Umm, actually the car thing only happened once, but the rest is accurate.
The first step is to attend an open mic at your closest comedy club. Test some jokes and see how it goes! Keep coming back and getting better. If you continue to improve, the club will usually hire you to host a weekend show. If that goes well, you’ll host another. Other comedians will get to know you and put you on a show here or there. From there, it just grows! Be aware that the local open mic comedians have a clique comparable to junior high girls. Before you know it, you’ll break in and be hanging with the cool kids.
