Warning! All Degrees Are Not Created Equal

Think all degrees are created equal? Think again! Accreditation is a sign that the college is legit. Employers know this too and they will take into consideration if your college is accredited or not.

Over the past few years, I’ve been working on my degree. What a lot of people are surprised about is the fact that I’m taking all of my classes online. I have been since I started.

The economy is still somewhat shaky, and because of this, many people, like me, are returning to school for an advanced degree. An advanced degree can help individuals climb the corporate ladder, and many studies have proven that individuals with a higher degree tend to make more money.

While that aspect of education remains the same, some things are changing, and people aren’t always going to a brick and mortar school to gain their diploma. Many students are looking at online colleges, and because of the popularity and flexibility of these schools, the opportunities granted to online graduates are becoming more plentiful.

For those who are considering online education, there are a few important things I can recommend to you. Namely, the value of your anticipated degree will depend on the accreditation of the school you choose, the degree you study and the job you hope to secure at the end of it.

One way to get the most out of your online education is to look only at regionally accredited colleges. Regionally accredited colleges in essence have a stamp of approval—they will be widely accepted and recognized in many different fields.

If you are uncertain about your job prospects after graduating, then accreditation helps put your best foot forward in your job search.

In line with accreditation, you also need to consider what you want to get from your degree. If you are looking at a specific job, then you will want to choose a degree specialization that will help get you there eventually.

To truly make the most of your degree, talk with someone who is working in that field to know what degrees are actively sought after.

One of the best ways to make your online degree work for you is to get a specialization. It is tempting to get a general degree in business, English or even general studies, but a specialization helps you study the area you are most interested in, and many employers also like to see a specific direction in your education.

Even if you focus your degree in a specific field, you can still apply for jobs that do not fit in that specialization, but rather, that fit under the umbrella of your general degree. In this way, specialized degrees help you get the best of both worlds.

If you are thinking of returning to school, an online degree is a valid option. As long as you know the basics before you get started, you can find regionally accredited colleges and degree specializations that will help you in the long run, and there’s a wealth of information online.
