I would recommend to anyone looking into becoming a wind technician to take some hands-on classes that would include mechanical, hydraulics and electronics. Wind turbines are autonomous robots so if there is a robotics class or club at your school this could be great preparation for a career in wind. I strongly suggest building some electronics kits available on the internet. These simple electronic kits will give you experience with electrical components and get you ready to read schematics. When the kit does not work as they often do it will give you the opportunity to troubleshoot and fix the problem. Studying for a Ham radio license is fantastic knowledge also, it is not required but it will give you a basic understanding that others just do not have.
When looking at a college or technical school look for these same things and look for a school that has an actual turbine that students get to work on. This gives you the confidence to climb an 80 meter tower and troubleshoot problems on an actual power producing turbine. This is a fun job but safety is job number one especially when you are working in high places and around high voltage electricity. You must get training and have confidence in your ability to do these things safely. A good training course should include a lot of safety training.
Do you need a degree qualification to become one?
No. It is helpful to have a certificate or a degree but some companies will hire and train you. A lot of companies want you to be at least 21 years old so that you can travel and rent a vehicle if you are a traveling tech. This gives you time to go to a 2 year school and get an associates degree.
